The thing is to believe. P said in a low voice often. Distrust bears no good. Believe, but of course, not always. One must question, think over, things that come out of the TV or are said by a politician (or anyone hungry for power). Just in case. But for the most part, the idea is sound. Believe, Trust, Share. If you don't believe, you can't trust, and if you can't trust you can't share anything. P believed that the phrase seemed like some quote from Yoda, but it still was true. Thus green light and go, back to pedaling along, with eyes wide open, and see how, more often than not, it's worth it.

Do we believe, trust and share? Ask René, Aleix, & Vito.

And of course you know about le cool's website? ¿ And Facebook and Twitter?

Stolen moments

Have you ever walked down the street, and wished that your eyes were a camera…? Then you’d be able to immortalize everything you see without the fear of being confronted. Funny how everything changes when a camera suddenly appears on the scene. See something you like, and shoot a photo just by looking at it. I mean, don’t forget, to actually find something that is worth taking a picture of, you have to open your eyes and look. Sounds silly no? But how many times do we walk down the same street before we realise there’s an interesting mural on the wall….All too familiar huh? Luckily Juan José Fernández has done the seeing for us. When we look at his photos in his exhibition “Instantes Robados a la Mirada”, we are faced with images that could be from any city, but no city in particular at the same time. People and buildings that don’t hide themselves in front of the camera lens, they simply just ARE…/ Noelia Aparicio Trans. by Kat

Festival Asia

For the ninth year in a row, Barcelona will get closer to the Far East thanks to Festival Asia, which has been getting bigger and this year will be held in the centre of the city for ten days. As always, it will be a multidisciplinary festival: there’ll be concerts (like Chinese folk-rock band Shan Ren Band, Japanese percussionist Leonard Eto or the Pakistani star of bhangra pop Abrar-ul-Haq), kathakali theater from India, games, gastronomy, cinema, calligraphy... And pay special attention to the 26th, because lots of activities will be held that day at MACBA, CCCB and the Plaça dels Àngels to give an oriental touch to the La Mercè festival. And what better moment than now, when Asia is a trend (and on the news every day) to explore the cultures of the continent and forget stereotypes./ Marta Bausells

Insurgentes

This year celebrates the Bicentenary of the Independence of Mexico and as if it were a little summary of history, they are putting on a one night P.A.R.T.Y. Titán, Nortec, Dapuntobeat, Sonido Changorama and Silverio, the majority of the legendary bands from the last ten years from this North American country, have a date in Apolo that will leave it reeking of...tequila! As local representatives of the latino vibe, we've got the live-wire eccentrics from Meneo and the groups Folcor and Sudacateca, who have been keeping the bass beating in the electropical scene over the last months. Just so you know,  the rebels are on tour and are heading to Shanghai, Madrid, Stockholm, Porto and Mexico City, so this is your opportunity to get up to date or reminisce. Acordeón Bonaparte Trans. by Rebecca

Anything but a shoe

Is a shoe an object or an item? Is it a necessity or a complication? Should a shoe be more comfortable than stylish? Or a jewel instead of a useful piece of clothing? Must one shoe be like the other shoe? (are both feet the same?) Are shoes dictating the rhythm of our lives or are our feet setting our style? A shoe, can it be forever? (but then, where are traditional shoe-makers and why do major shoe brands create collections for every season?). A shoe can be high, hollow, heavy and tired, fun, easy and comfortable. A shoe can be anything but a shoe. Let´s see what the guys from Surtido have envisaged for everything (except for shoes)./ Descalza Trans. by Carol

The idea that graffiti as an ephemeral creation of a few vandals getting walls dirty is now long gone, and in the last few years, more and more street artists have made it from the streets to big art galleries. Is it a loss of identity or the creation of a new artistic genre? The debate is on the table, but it is obvious that graffiti is no longer just graffiti: stencils, pochoirs, stickers, collages, glue, paintbrushes... Postgraffiti is something beyond spraypaint and it seems to blur the limits between art, the streets and art galleries. A good example of this evolution is the exhibition that is opening this coming Thursday in Montana which brings us closer to the offerings coming from Mexico. Fantasy, drawing, the questioning of identity and contributions from Mexican folklore. Are you in? / María Arranz Trans. by Carol

Joya

The word jewel always seems better suited to conversations of grannies and women with blazers and a newspaper under their arm than to artists, young people and the avant garde. Jewels are often associated with luxury, nobility and the posh. And jewels come from the past and perhaps that´s why there is confusion. But the world of jewelry has evolved into its own universe, close to art, similar to fashion and worthy of its own fairs, prizes and schools. But even if we are still amongst those who think that jewels are not for us, it´s worth checking out this week that pays homage to jewels. 80 contemporary and internacional jewelry artists, renowned galleries, three prizes and the best of a bunch of schools. Jewels too are more than what they once were./ Descalza Trans. by Rebecca

Open Workshops in Poble Nou

There’s no doubt by now that the Poblenou neighbourhood is changing, but we don’t know what’s going to happen to many industrial buildings that are not part of the plans of city hall. On occasion of the Festa Major del Poblenou, the spaces for creation and exhibition of the area present, once again, the Tallers Oberts (open workshops), a great occasion to get to know the places you haven’t visited and to see the works of their resident artists. Hangar, La Escocesa, Niu… Much of the culture of this city is going on there —I’m talking about the non-official or sponsored culture, and they still resist (perhaps stronger than ever) the transformations that surround them. Anyway, it’s a luxury to be able to see their insides and what each of them stands for during three days, as well as concerts and performances. You shouldn’t miss it./ Marta Bausells

Niños consentidos

Niños Consentidos is a festival for artists spoilt by their expression of choice. The key is to experiment in any form to see where your curiosity leads you. The search that guides the event is the same that brought it from Buenos Aires, where it started in 2006, to Barcelona, hosting for a third time. All artists are invited to exhibit their proposals, whatever the discipline. Niños Consentidos is a lucky dip of ideas, where artists can make connections and join in, collaborating with the public and celebrities of the night. The artistic jam session awaits any who want to exhibit (themselves) at the Cova de les Cultures./ Francesca A. Crispino Trans. by Suky Taylor

Thomas Noone: Curts

One to eat. One to “wow”, and one to “aaarrrgghhh”. The concept of trial and error, (or just plain error), always fascinates me… It’s like a scientific first step, and whether you tread softly, or stamp firmly, it’s always artistically fascinating. And this, my dear friends is exactly what the Brazilian Ederson Rodrigues Xavier, the German Johannes Wieland, and the English guy Thomas Noone are planning on working on. I know it sounds like some kind of strange joke; but, using Noone’s company, we will have the pleasure of witnessing some very attentive choreographies and philosophical scenes for a whole three nights under the title of “Curts”. Now I bet that’s got you saying “wow” and “aaarrrggghhh”. All three choreographers will be presenting similar scenes, but all with a slightly different twist. Just think of it like having a G&T with a squeeze of lime, a slice of lemon, or a dash of bitters. Three similar stories, based on three different personal experiences./ Francisco Estrada Trans. by Kat

Truman Peyote + Many Mansions

The hallucinogenic peyote cactus was highly valued by the Aztecs and other pre-Columbian nations, revered for its power to take them beyond where their ships could sail. In the 16th century a Spanish missionary wrote about its qualities, the first known western [sic] author to record the existence and knowledge of the plant, and describe its hallucinogenic effects, although I don’t know if the Franciscan monk, called Bernardino, actually tried the cactus. The Beatniks were also well informed, as is this group from Massachusetts. As you would imagine, Truman Peyote aren’t your classic pop band. They’re more into noises, surf flicks (Massachusetts?) and the odd song reminiscent of Animal Collective-style psychedelia (the hit New Wife New Life), although in general they’re much weirder./ Eduard Gras Trans. by Suky Taylor

To start, there aren't any euros here. Instead, there are Ecos, that you can get at other exchange fairs of the Ecoxarxa (it's the first in Barcelona, but there have been more in other places) or simply by trading in euros. But the idea, of course, is to construct a bubble in the form of a fair for a few hours, where you can sell, exchange, inform, or divulge alternatives to the current system, removed from capitalism and centered in the agro-ecological and handmade. This time, today, it's only a few hours in the course of a specific day, but someday it could be an entire commercial center, a self-managed town or, who knows, a whole country working in a fair and humane way. Hipnotik

Concerts, break beat battles, MC's, graffiti, workshops and conferences. The best damn rap festival in Barcelona is back in the city. Hipnotik Festival 2010 has got the steaks sizzling for a year that will be one to remember. New mixes, new groups, and above all, new rivals and rivalries. With a pristine playbill featuring the likes of DjQbert, SFDK, Morodo, Chacho Brothers, Crew Cuervos and a whole host of other notable rappers, the flow and rhymes will be there in full force. And this year Hipnotik is going borderless and the lyrics will be flying straight out of the CCCB to all around the world. Ewan Pearson

Who doesn’t know Ewan Pearson? Remixer deluxe for Chemical Brothers, Black Strobe, Playgroup, Goldfrapp, Pet Shop Boys and many more. He is probably better known as the outstanding and very talented remixer he is than for his own creations, although the tracks he released as Maas on Soma Records not just satisfied both, picky journalists and the critical dancefloor masses, but left them speechless in excitement. Anyway, it was him who transformed tracks of dozens of artist to musical jewels that adapt to you auditory canals better than a custom made suit to your sholders. This goes so far that sometimes his remixes are better known than the original song. So even though he already graced Barcelona several times with his presence, you should definitely not miss a single DJ set from him./ Christian Schärmer

Silent Disco

Through our headphones we match our life with its soundtrack. Each song is a mission of introspection that makes our eyes well up, finds the words we need, or produces a huge smile. And then we put aside the introspection to share the experience in a club, and in that moment of euphoria the blast of the music unites us with a dancefloor full of strangers. Now, SilentArena have brought these two states of happiness together, in their creation Silent Disco, a club night where dancers are given wireless headsets with a choice of two channels, while in the outside world all you can hear are tuneless shouting and stamping feet. Actually, silence and noise aren’t so incompatible./ Miriam Arcera Trans. by Suky Taylor

Nit de Sant Joan

While in the city some businesses tremble and some venues die, the artistic spirit seems to be alive and kicking and bringing new life to half-forgotten spaces. Artèria Paral·lel has sprung up in where back in the day could be found the Teatro Español, Studio 54 and the Scènic, right in  “Paralelobarcelonés”. For the new opening, what better than a remake 29 years later of the musical (or the music magazine) “La nit de Sant Joan” by Dagoll Dagom which in its day represented a leap forward from the theater scene of the day. The songs of the great Sisa will sound even sweeter in the magical space of this San Juan in September, and those strange figures of the night of the solstice will appear, mix, mingle and disappear again in this retro 60's party bringing us a bit of innocence for a couple of hours./ Albert T.Riera Trans. by DonVito

Sometimes we just need to flow. The world needs to flow. Miquel Bauçà shared an ethereal impossibility to understand the present, he was convinced that an interventionist human creation was necessary and he lived in an adaptation of a self-being that challenged himself with a world moralistically immoral. But Miquel Bauçà only needed to flow. Nicole D’Amonville didn´t exist without writing, didn’t subsist without language and couldn´t find her way without poetry. It is also known that Nicole D’Amonville only needed to flow. All sovereignty needed to flow as an elevated experience, because that is the only way that words stop having meaning and become a meaning themselves. In Centre Arts Santa Mònica they are trying once again to let it flow for the third Sunday in a row, as always, at 7 o'clock. Let it flow./ Elisenda Sevilla Trans. by Carol

La conversación (V.O.)

If there were such a thing as the cinematographic Olympics, Coppola would be in leading position, despite his most recent films. Back in ´74 he embarked in the filming of “The Conversation”, a small and personal film, completely removed from the style of his first... The story of a private investigator who has the job of listening to the conversations of a woman and a man it seems she is in love with. This dynamic weaves together a deeply psychological work, moving towards experimental cinema. The result, a key work in his filmography, winner of the Cannes Palme D´ or and filmed in the same year as Godfather II. You could spend a thousand years arguing over art but, in the end, everything can be summed up in just one thing: do you or don’t you like what you see. And by that standard Irene Bou rocks. The whole Casbah. You go to her exhibitions and you wonder how much her paintings are worth; months go by and one day you find yourself asking what she’s been up too since the last time. We really wanted to tout her last week, word of honor, so everybody could come to the opening, but… well, here we are now. And we’re sorry, okay? Luckily “La edad de la oscura razón” is open to the public until October 24th and there you can see all that Irene is capable of (emotion, viscera, personality, honesty, longing…) and how she’s captured the sense of that lovely azure. Sitz, by Angela Lamprianidou

Uber-interesting it would be if at some important dinner you decided to bend yourself backwards, grab your knife and fork like they were screwdrivers and dish yourself up some food with you neck bent 90 degrees. It's a safe bet to say that you'd end up in a straightjacket, but up on the stage it's just this type of “madness” that we seem to always as for. In this vein, choreography has offered a means to think hard about the conventions and the possibilities the body offers to destroy them. And in doing so, elaborate designs within space and time. Pure dance has a time and place like Sitz by Angela Lamprianidou where we're shown with movements both individual and collective, the spirit of the experimental, albeit avoiding the grotesque (which is also fascinating but that's for another time). All with a healthy dash of humor, of an intelligent sort of complicit smiles./ Francisco Estrada Trans. by DonVito

Carlos Gardel sung about how young we all are in our twenties, but unfortunately he never got the chance to tell us about our thirties. Probably the most prominent figure in the history of tango, “el padre” leaves us wandering around like orphans for the 30th anniversary of the Gelobert-Azzopardi Dance Company. Gardel had many international hits, throughout his career, as well as embodying the soul of tango, and was somewhat of a controversy in his time. So today we are lucky enough that the magic of his body and soul is being commemorated at the Teatre Lliure, where we will be able to see Belmonte, a piece first unveiled in 1988. The fight between life and death, instinct and reason, once again embodies itself through the figure of the legendary bull fighter. This will be your last chance to have the privilege of seeing a performance at the Teatre Lliure, before the Mercat de les Flors takes the lead role in venue status./ Juan Carlos Romero Trans. by Kat

Mutek again. Sónar of Canada again proposes a very interesting night at Moog. Against all standards. Dave Aju is not a big fan of 808 or 909 sounds that made techno and house big. He likes to sample himself, cuts the sounds out of his vocal chords and paints the dancefloor in new, bright colours —all the sounds are sampled from his own voice and corporal noises. Dave Aju (an anagram of Deja Vu) is from San Francisco. Exactly from the place where you wouldn’t expect a strong and straight forward house scene. The cities’ time of prosperity already passed but he has what it takes to bring it up again, to push things into the right direction with his funky sound full of blues and soul. The swank little Vila de Gràcia is one of the city’s most Bohemian and groovy districts, and its centre is packed with authentic culinary delights from Japan, Thailand, Palestine, Turkey and Egypt, as well as places dedicated to serving up the wonders of Catalan cuisine. A great secret is La Panxa del Bisbe. After his success at Barcelona restaurant Santa María, Xavi Codina has set up his own kitchen, specialising in miniature cookery, perfect for pockets and discerning palates. My favourites of the season are battered rabbit ribs, mussels with chips, and for dessert, Coca-Cola mousse. The water and olives are on the house. With Exgae

It was August, Barcelona was on hold because of the heat and vacations, and suddenly a certified fax arrived for EXGAE (a non-profit association formed to combat the abuses of SGAE (the Spanish RIAA). It was sent by lawyers from SGAE, and in it, they insisted that the newly-formed association break up and disappear under the threat of being sued for "unfair competition." WTF, right? The members of EXGAE, luckily, are moving forward: they took more than a month to respond and when they did, it was forceful. Nothing about dissolving, nothing about changing their name. On their side, more than 110,000 visits to their website in just two days, tons of support, a massive Facebook following... they're not alone. They're not the only ones who think that this should be done better. And they're still fighting the good fight. (By the way, for the Oxcar on October 28th, they're looking for a football team to play around a bit. Anyone?) ./ Iu Peña Trans. by Laura

SECRETS AND DREAMS OF... FRED I SON

We’re  Eli, Xavi, Xesc y Cristian, and we play indie pop and just released our first album, “Diu que no sap què vol”. You began... as a duo with guitar and drums. One day Xesc wrote some lyrics, Xavi made the music, and we had what looked like a hit, so that’s how we got together. When we wanted to record the album, we invited Cristian to join. And now we’re a band. Your songs are born… in the bedroom/studio of Xavi and then they get polished up in our practice space. They seem like simple enough songs right? They are, but in most cases they also have their complexity. You get the chills from… winter in the Pyrenees and sometimes our own nerves. You get sleepy from… darkness and silence. And muscle relaxants too. A dish to accompany your music…Oh that’s a great idea and a raclette (fondue) would do perfectly: melted cheese, potatoes, and pickled veggies… plus it’s usually something you eat with friends. You’d play a secret concert in… a Golondrina(yacht). With… Lloyd Cole,Roddy Frame, Prefab Sprout and The Lilac Time. A secret… We have a parallel group with the same make-up as Fred i Son. And a dream? To make a lot of albums, each one better than the last.
