Bacoa

I also cannot fathom why it´s taken so long to make it to Barcelona, but it is now official: hamburgers are the new hip and cool culinary trend. And the hamburgers from Bacoa, a little and cozy place located behind the Santa Caterina market, are possibly the best. Yes, yes, the best. You can say what you please (this place, or that…), but the luxurious presentation of their servings mixed with a classic flair is unbeatable. My favourite is the Swiss burger. Or maybe the Japanese burger. Or the Bacoa burger, which has two (two!) 150 grams hamburgers, one on top the other. I dunno… the truth is that you should try it and decide for yourself. Pity that the only background music is a reggae version of Radiohead… anybody have an iPod to turn this place into seventh heaven? / Iu Peña Trans. by Carol & James

El Filete Ruso

We’re still harping on about hamburgers. Be warned: they’re getting better and better. First things first, the name: a hamburger joint called El Filete Ruso The Russian Fillet. Yes: a the namesake is a homemade recipe made with garlic, parsley and onion, fried in olive oil. Unreal. Secondly, the burgers: Quality, with a special mention going out to the ox burger and the ibérica (with beef, Serrano ham, truffles, parmesan and arugula), and a particularly interesting vegetarian option made from rice. Thirdly, the side dishes: the steak tartare is delicious. Fourthly, the philosophy: the idea of slow food, and the search for the perfect gourmet burger. Fifth, the verdict: one of the best burger restaurants this city has to offer, suitable for the discerning palate, when accompanied with a good wine and a modern, inviting location. Gourmet hamburgers, eh. Long live the hamburger, I say!/ Leo Altés Trans. by Aoife

La panxa del Bisbe

The swank little Vila de Gràcia is one of the city’s most Bohemian and groovy districts, and its centre is packed with authentic culinary delights from Japan, Thailand, Palestine, Turkey and Egypt, as well as places dedicated to serving up the wonders of Catalan cuisine. A great secret is La Panxa del Bisbe. After his success at Barcelona restaurant Santa María, Xavi Codina has set up his own kitchen, specialising in miniature cookery, perfect for pockets and discerning palates. My favourites of the season are battered rabbit ribs, mussels with chips, and for dessert, Coca-Cola mousse. The water and olives are on the house. And for afterwards, the bar next door, Gata Mala, does the best G&Ts in the neighbourhood, at 5€, personalised with pepper and a slice of cucumber. Latest news! Scientists continue to work around the clock to determine the origin of the UFO that landed in Barcelona a couple of months ago. Experts have tentatively named New South Wales, Australia, as a possibility, based on the vehicle's design (it looks like a building). New York and Berlin have also been flaunted as options. Against restaurant establishment warnings, people have started to venture inside the object and are said to have adopted some of the strange habits promoted in there, like sharing a big table with strangers, having long breakfasts while reading magazines, or eating burgers at unusual hours, like 6pm. The purpose of its mission is still unclear, although critics fear it could mean the overthrow of life, and bars, as we know them./ Kati

Café Adonis

In Greek mythology Adonis was a god who was eternally you, as well as the gorgeous lover of Aphrodite who died in her arms after being gored by a wild boar. In the center of the neighborhood of Gràcia there’s the Café Adonis 1940 a space whose owners preserve in a state of contemporary youth. A classic bar with modern touches. The Adonis opened its doors forty years ago and after a long period of serving as a gathering point for people in the neighborhood, it was shuttered. Just around a year ago it was resurrected and now it once again a point of reference in the area, the perfect spot for a coffee, a pick-me up aperitif or a heart dish of “modern and traditional cooking”. They’ve got the requisite WIFI and at night kick things up a notch with cocktails. For me it’s my new nook for a weekend morning of cañas and lazily perusing the newspaper./ Yarí Candelas-Morales Trans. by Don Vito

Can Nabo

It’s pretty much impossible to eat in the centre of Barcelona for less than 10€, but every now and then, you come across a place that opts for a different concept and cheaper prices. Such is Can Nabo, a well-known secret of the Barrio Gótico. Its relaxed and friendly atmosphere attracts students and people working in the area, and the restaurant serves dishes from only 2.50€, and jugs of water for 0.80€. You can also choose from two house menus of excellent value. For 4€ you can have two dishes, usually pasta, rice or salad, or for 6€ you get a little treat, such as ravioli stuffed with tomato and ROCKET/ARUGULA, plus dessert. Bread is included but drinks are extra. One of its greatest pulls is the friendly and conscientious service – quite a find! / Yarí Candelas-Morales Trans. by Suky Taylor

La Milagrossa

Oh Gràcia don't fail me now. I know I live just barely within your gilded borders, but I need a cold beer and a hot tapa and some new digs to make my fickle heart glow. Kebabs don't do it anymore, how about something with some soul, and maybe a nice nook to chill with a friend perhaps. Live music on the weekends from hip local bands like Mujeres or Lucrecia de Dalt might be asking a bit too much. Or is it...? And maybe even a couple wide-screens to watch Barça with my fellow culés on a weeknight. I know I've asked for so much, but lo I have received! La Milagrossa is all this and a few extra touches more; freshly-made Empandas and Milanesas and other tapas delights ala Argentina. Cañas start at just 1€ and Nacho knows how to pour a stiff drink and keep the vibe just right./ Don Vito

Cup & Cake

God bless America! Yes, at last cup cakes are officially the new sweet toothed trend in Barcelona, along with gourmet burger bars, and you will stumble across them in the deep and dark corners of the city. Cup & Cake was one of the first to legitimise this glamourous version of the Spanish magdalena. Get yourselves down to Calle Enric Grados in order to get your hands on these tasty little morsels of sophisticated decadence. You can order cakes in advance, or you can salivate with desire as you try to choose amongst one of many flavours. Beware of the brownie and apple ones! They've also got the regular coffee and sandwiches on offer, so there's no excuse not to pop down there. Cup cake heaven has arrived./ Mila Doré Trans. by Kat

Cornelia & Co. is like the Swiss army knife of any good gourmet. With a menu which ranges from Iberian cured meats, to sushi, cheeses, seafood, fresh pasta, all types of fresh meats and fish, El Cornelia is prepared to satisfy just about any sort of cravings at, practically, any time of the day. In the given case that the menu isn't enough to satisfy your needs, there is the possibility to eat and drink any of the products which are being sold at their own shop. Furthermore, since the kitchen opening hours are from 7:30 in the morning to 12 at night, there is no excuse to not find a table to enjoy those 4pm lunches. Get to know the Cafetería Clarés, located in the Eixample and with a quite varied patronage. From the clientele that one would expect in a tea house (read this as ladies dressed in their finery and colors, bathed in a golden glow) to families from the neighborhood who come round to give the cafeterias of everyday and always a bit of a rest. This cross between a modernist bar and a British tea house has a fabulous offering of pastries and exquisite cakes (the tarte tatin is to die for) all day. El Petit Burger

You may have noticed the latest trend to hit the Barcelona lunch break is a home-made burger at a brunch bar (yum!), and today we’re celebrating a new one in Born - the new brunch bar centre of the city. A spin-off from Bestiari, El Petit Burger is careful to maintain its style and quality, with a tempting menu that’s as mouth-watering as Bacoa and as well-presented as Federal. The choice ranges from classic, to gourmet, to original (who says foie gras doesn’t go with mincemeat?), plus vegetarian and more extravagant options. Yes, although it might not seem like it, there is life beyond the centre. So do me the favour of getting out of the bubble of crowds and plant yourself in Vallcarca, above Parc Güell, so you can discover that there are still quiet places in Barcelona, where in the bargain you can find secrets like this. Manuel and Katharina´s restaurant; he's from Vigo and she's German and a year ago they settled in this neighbourhood and decided to refurbish a legendary venue, and combine in it exquisite decorative taste (in a nautical theme) with a simple yet creative menu: tapas, pastas and meat dishes, with a special mention for one of its signature dishes, the flame grilled secreto iberico with chestnut purée and Oporto plums. Or the steamed cockles. Or the “smashed” eggs. Mmm! The wine list is extensive and the (home-made) ice-cream, amazing. Meatpacking Bistro

Travelling is great, but when your finances / work / whatever don’t allow for such indulgences, it’s handy to have places around that give us the travel experience without the hassle. If you want to visit New York, Meatpacking Bistro is a good option. It’s so, so New York – with its fused décor of twenties and industrial, and a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere – that you even have to book to make sure you don’t have to wait drooling while other customers enjoy their food. It’s worth going just for the fantastic chips (sorry, fries), and the Meatpacking Burger and the Caesar Salad are also pretty tasty. Dishes that are simple but delicious – because everything is organic (I know!). And true to type, the kitchen’s open all day. Getcha sweet ass down there!/ Irene de Mas / Trans. by Suky Taylor

Kiosko Burger

The search for the best burger in Barcelona has become, in only a few months, a more difficult task and yet at the same time easier than ever. I’ll explain: easy because in a matter of months a good number of places have appeared that know how to make a real burger. The difficulty because, well, there are loads of them. There is Bacoa, there is Petit Burger, there is Filete Ruso, there is Federal… Stop making hamburgers which are so appetizing or we will all end up looking like beach balls! The people at Bacoa, kindly ignored our plea (thank god) and have now opened their second joint after the success of the first: with more space, more tables, more hamburgers but the same taste. And also, only 10 minutes from Bacoa. Don’t forget to try the Australian. Beetroot, BBQ sauce! Mmmmm!!/ Iu Peña Trans. by Kate Howden

Barcelona restaurateurs: I. Am. Sick. Of. You. I am sick of your burgers, which you’ve adopted as if they were the gospel. I am sick of your “New York-style” restaurants, because if I want New York I go on eDreams. I don’t want to see any more Tragaluces or Lázaro Rosa-Violanes. No more eateries-cum-organic-shops. No more white tiles in the  expensive butcher’s mold. No more restaurants where the quality of food has been sacrificed at the altar of leather designer sofas. You can stick it all where the sun doesn’t shine, for all I care, because I’m off to have the best Italian veal escalope in the world. A Punto

Just a while ago I heard it said that in a world where the big things have little differences, it's the little thing that make the difference. Well from this little spot in Gràcia they've set out make the main ingredient of their dishes customizable and offer their clients the privilege of ordering without a menu and heed the advice of their own private chef. Traditional cooking, signature dishes and some incredible desserts have been captivating the taste buds of the lucky neighbors and chance passerby whose daring has been well rewarded. On one side of the burners, a chef-de-luxe trained in the finest kitchens; on the other, public relations and customer service making sure everything is A Punto and just right. Miu Restaurant

A few months ago, and after quite some time I suppose, Sara and I went to look for Alicia when she got off of work. Middle of Barcelona. Three in the afternoon. Hungry hungry hippos! What to eat? A sandwich perhaps, a burger, a lunch special…? It was then that Alicia turned us on to Miu, a Japanese restaurant of the most chic of styling located on Valencia street with Passeig de Gracia. At first glace it seemed smaller than it is, but once we’d gone down stairs, we saw that Miu had plenty to offer. What we loved the most was the atmosphere, the careful decoration with such eye for detail and the spacing between the tables, far from cramps, you feel at ease, not having to eavesdrop on your fellow diners (your boyfriend is a douchbag, now I know, please more on to another topic!) At Miu you’re senses are soothed and delighted, a salad for started, maki and seasoned vegetables to follow, and an apple tart to finish things with a dash a sweetness. It’s like eating with your hands – it connects us to our roots and introduces us to new tastes, all in one experience. His menu is based on native baguettes like butifarra con escalivada (Spanish sausage with roast veg – try it), tongue and local produce, with ideas from around the world; a combination of local and exotic foods that produces delicious baguettes with a taste of Mexico, Vietnam or Bavaria. And there’s also his festival food idea, a range of tasty snacks, including the star dish Bo Ssäm, from Korea. I know, the cuisine "à la Chef" is no longer a novelty, but when it comes to a vegetarian restaurant perhaps the issue itself is somewhat more novel. In this case, the Chef of the kitchen is the Lleidatana Teresa Carles, who has dedicated over thirty years to creating vegetarian delicacies and has now opened a restaurant in Barcelona. Neko

There are places which hold innate (and immediate) charm, and this is one of them. Perhaps it is the ambiance you take in when you enter the small premises, the kindness and enthusiasm shown by staff behind the counter, the drawings hung on the walls or even the subtle soundtrack which permeates the background. “Neko” is a cute little takeaway sushi joint where no detail has been overlooked (look no further than the small trays on which they serve any of their five menus and the care with which everything is placed on them). Their makis and nigiris are deliciously fresh and their homemade ginger gives the soy sauce that perfect flavour. They even have a small bar with four stools in case you don’t know where to take your food and you decide to eat in. Without doubt, one of those places you’ll want to visit every week./ Eva A. We have a new kid in town! Mandarosso Pastís is the sweet-toothed brother of our venerable Cucine Mandarosso; though he’s not just any sweet tooth either, but one who takes it to a whole other level ... If you are more the salty kind of person, do not worry, you can still try one of their delicious bagels (take a look at that olive bread) or a salad. And like the good kind of jam that always comes in small packages, the venue is the most welcoming (with flowers and wooden tables) and can be found near the Mercat de Santa Caterina. Pizzas l’Avia

It’s already been a couple of years since I’ve been going to eat at this place and I don’t know why it never dawned on me to mention it in Le Cool. Perhaps its because habit transforms the peculiar into normal, and eventually, the fact that this small place is run by a gentleman who writes books about Freemasonry and tells tales of encounters with aliens and time travels, seems almost as familiar to me as the spinach filling of his empanadas. The gentleman in question is also an artist and the walls of his pizzeria are filled with his drawings. And the food? Well, delicious and cheap: the specialties of the house are the aforementioned empanadas and pizza, although you should definitely not miss out on the desserts or wines. Of course, I don’t even need to mention that the main dish are the thousand and one stories of the owner. Gastronomic and extrasensory experiences guaranteed./ María Arranz Trans. by Marsha

Arc Café

The Borne neighbourhood might be your cup of tea, or not; but it can’t have escaped you that it’s got some of the strangest named streets of the whole city. Not just the typical ones of professions like Vidriers (glasscutters) or Mirallers (mirror makers), but more random ones like c/ dels Petons (kissing street) (watch out romantics: they named it so because this was where folk kissed their loved ones goodbye who had been condemned to death!) There’s c/ de Les Mosques, or flies (the smallest street in BCN). And not long ago I discovered c/ del Malcuinat (read: badly cooked). Though this is the complete opposite of what you’d expect to find in a street named after a yummy vegetable, the Pumpkin. At number 19, on the corner of Ample (which doesn’t do its name much justice, truth be told), is Arc Café, a quiet, delicately decorated eatery, whose specialty is Thai curry and various options for veggies on their lunch menu, all for €9.90. On Café

It's said, and we'll agree, that Paseig Sant Joan is continuing to be an increasingly attractive thoroughfare as it becomes ever more a creative magnet. It's said, and we'll see, that there are an increasing number of things on offer between the bike lanes and roller-bladers on this boulevard. Amongst all of this, we'll take a respite on a little corner straight out of Berlin. A cafe that has conquered a bit of lebensraum on the sidewalk, with their sexy drinks and healthy eats all with a meticulous presentation. A cafe where the winter sun warms your frosty thoughts as you tuck in a mid-week meal or enjoy an evening meal as the evening blooms and night falls. Any ideas for an excuse for brunch this week? / Descalza Trans. by Don Vito

Apolo Diner

The adjacent Pakistani and Chinese shopkeepers will lament it, but the time is nigh to have a spot a bit more dignified to do the pre- and post-concert meet-and-greet at the sala Apolo. And those folks at Apolo, in their zeal to make our lives easier, have begun their conquest of Nou de la Rambla and have opened, where the mythical Petit Apolo was (that bar with all the beer taps connected to a score-board), their Apolo Diner. And yes, as the name would have it, it will have everything necessary: a design both modern and inspired by American diners (of the long bar and large windows), and a knock-out menu of hamburgers, brava-fries, hot dogs, sandwiches and more. Oh yeah, all that you could ask for before or after a hard night of partying. And for when you've satiated your hunger, the cocktails of all types will flow (premium ones too) to get you where you want to be (mentally) in style. So yep, things are looking up./ Leo Altés

NAP

The fine folks at NAP (Neapolitan Authentic Pizza) Barcelona assure us that the their shop is “a true pizzeria” direct from Naples, with high quality products, some hailing from their home region. Whether or not their claims ring true, the pizza was without a doubt one of the best I’ve tried here in Barcelona. According to the owners, they’re the only ones around who produce their own yeast, the result being a rather distinct dough. Softer, lighter, and clearly more flavorful. Only open a couple of months, this little shop already has weekly crowds. And that can only mean good things for the NAP. One reason could be their star attraction, pizza with their very own mozzarella di bufala, an authentic and very tasty cheese that’s something else entirely./ Iu Peña Trans. by Isaac

Gelida

Lunch time. As always, Gelida is packed. But don't you worry: once you get in, the kind owners will find you a place –even if they have to move 3 other people. First come, first seated. What to choose between all the dishes at less than 4 euros? With Catalan traditional comfort food at very cheap prices –and with amazing quality–, it's one of the favorites of professionals, intellectuals, families and pensioners of the area. When Jose (the waiter) sings or shouts while you eat a homemade dessert, you wonder: what does this bar have that makes it so special? It may be the old, almost folk decoration. Or it may be the fact that it's been run by the same family for 65 years, and that makes a difference. You'll leave smelling a bit like the kitchen, but nowhere else will you be treated like home./ Marta Bausells

Tarannà

Poble Sec, looks like you’ve missed the boat. You had some good ideas and it seemed you were in the running, but Sant Antoni has just officially beaten you in the race to be the barrio with the coolest new bars per square metre. And it’s not even Sant Antoni – it’s really just down to Calle Parlament: the street where all Barcelona went for horchata (Sirvent) and patatas bravas (Bohèmic) now also boasts the three must-go places of the area (on three consecutive corners): bar Calders, el Federal, and in the last few days Tarannà has also opened. A bit like a miniature Federal with exquisite décor, a basement exhibition room, delicious baguettes, cheese boards, their own bravas recipe, homemade cakes, juices, and ecological fair trade coffee. Poble Sec, you never stood a chance./ Iu Peña Trans. by Suky Taylor
